Making Grays – Pigment and Color Diversity – Video Download

In this 5 minute video, Cathe discusses the importance of Grays in a painting. Not only do we need to know how to mix clear bright color, we need to be able to mix grayed colors and actual grays. Working from the complementary (opposite) colors of the color wheel, she shows you how to mix these from red and green. Starting with bright red on one end of the mixing trail, and bright green on the other, a set of grayed hues are mixed on the palette using various amounts of both. Cathe then looks at 2 finished paintings and talks about the usefulness of grayed hues in creating mood, showing distance, showing off a limited amount of bright color by placing the grays carefully, and creating a real diversity of brights and grays working together in a painting.
