This 11 minute video was filmed along the Cle Elum RIver in the Cascade Mountains of WA. Looking at a complicated rock that has many surfaces, Cathe first breaks it up into a value sketch drawing that has several interior shapes. Noticing the direction of the light, these shapes/planes have different values, depending on how they face the light. This preliminary drawing is used to do a short watercolor painting of the rock, making clear distinctions in different values on each shape, and also the surrounding shapes. A day at the river, what could be better?
